How much weight can I expect to lose?

The amount of weight you will lose, is dependant upon how much you hoop. As with any exercise
routine, your commitment is important. Studies show that hooping with a weighted adult sized hoop
(approx. 24oz.) can burn 300 calories in a 30 minute session.

Why hoop over jogging?

Hooping is much less impact on your joints than jogging. You can also hoop anywhere. Push the
coffee table over and watch it rain out the window, knowing you still got your exercise in, without wet
feet.

Why do I need such a huge hoop?

The amount of space you consume inside an adult hoop is really close to proportionate to that of a
child in a child size hoop.

Hooping is not Calculus. But if you think in numbers, here’s an explanation for you.
A common child hoop is a piece of tube approx. 7 feet long shaped into a circle. An adult hoop,
measuring 42 inches in diameter is an 11-foot long heavier material tube, again, shaped into a circle.
The time it takes to make one rotation is much longer for the bigger, heavier hoop, allowing you time
to react by swaying your body front to back to meet the hoop.

What should I wear to hoop?

Dress in light cotton clothing the simpler, the better. Light, form fitting cottons are best because they
do not allow the hoop to slip. Avoid spandex and other slick material. Depending your hooping
itinerary, bare your midriff to connect with the feel of waist hooping, your arms for shoulder hooping,
legs for knee hooping, etc. Clothing should be fitting, but not too tight to move freely. Baggy clothing
will also inhibit your routine.

Unless you are an experience hooper, avoid jewelry. Necklaces, bracelets, and watches get in the
way during the learning process. Rings can cause blisters to form during hand hooping. Dangling
earrings are also at risk for being pulled. If you feel the need to dress things up as a beginner, have a
hoop embellished to fit your taste.

Sneakers, or jogging shoes are the best for beginners. Many hoopers end up in socks or bare feet.
This is my preferred style, but when learning, it’s best to protect the toes from falling hoops.

How do I learn to hoop?

There are many, many ways to learn to hoop. You can take a class or private instruction if it is
available locally. You can find classes, and instructors in your area on the site Hoopcity.ca
You can also purchase DVD material designed to teach you from your own home. There are also
many videos on share sites, such as YouTube.com that offer different explanations for different
hooping styles. My favorite way of learning is to attend a local intro class to get started and practice
at home. Then, attend the local hoop jams for time to share and hoop with others both your level and
beyond. Private instruction is good for those who want to excel quickly in their routines.

How do I buy a hoop?

Look at the top of this page… click the “Buy Hoops” tab, and start your choosing. Or you can Google
adult hula hoop for an array of options.

What size hoop should I buy?

The most advised beginner hoop is a 42 inch in diameter (from outside to outside of tube) and
weighs between 24 and 32 ounces. If your body type happens to be shorter than average, thinner
than average, or just more sensitive than average, then a 40 inch, 16 ounce hoop is a great place to
start. For hand hooping, an even smaller, lighter hoop is recommended to prevent hand bruising or
other injury. A 36-38” 10-12 ounce hoop is a popular one for both hand and foot hooping. This size is
also good for children needing a stronger hoop than that sold in retail stores. There are also
available, water weighted adult hoops weighing in at up to 80 ounces. There are a few from every
group who seek the extreme, the water weighted super heavies are for those seekers. If not used
properly they may cause injury, so please use caution and seek instruction with these.

It is best if you can try out a few different sizes of hoops before purchasing to feel what is best on your
individual body. Just like the hoops, we are all different. Do not pick a hoop size based on the color
or pattern of tape. Most hoop makers will gladly make you a hoop to match your desires. It is better to
have the correct size and weight of hoop.
